SFI Director is a tool for managing distributed, heterogeneous UNIX Systems. Its functionality includes System Configuration, Application Distribution, NIS and NIS+ Management, User Creation, and Dynamic System Documentation. It is in service at a number of sites, managing networks of 50 to 200+ UNIX nodes, under Linux, Solaris, Digital UNIX, and HP-UX.

The developers of SFI Director are making a call for participation. SFI Director "Next Generation" will be a complete rewrite from scratch, and they seek to involve interested individuals and organizations from the requirements phase onward. Prototype code is available through the "alternate download" page.

The development of SFI Director 3.11 focused mainly on better supporting Linux. New features include: direct support for distributing RPM and pkg format packages, a GUI console for monitoring progress, an extensive HOWTO for applications management, support for custom remote process invocation (e.g. with ssh), and security improvements.

Version 3 includes a revised application distribution algorithm
which is based on freeze levels instead of time stamps. The next
few releases will build on furhter on this capability. Furthermore, an
install script is available which performs initial configuration of a
the Master Admin Console running Solaris 2.5.1, HP UX 10.01, Red
Hat Linux 5.0 or 5.2 or SuSE Linux 5.3 (some assembly required).
